Re Pointing
Give your brickwork a new lease of life
Cold weather, especially sub zero temperatures like we have a lot of our winter, can severely damage the pointing in between your brickwork if it starts to show signs of age. When water gets in gaps and freezes, it expands, loosening the mortar and causing the wall to be substantially weakened.
The only remedy for this is to rake out a certain amount of the mortar from between the brickwork, and re-point it, then seal the wall to prevent further problems. Walls with damaged pointing will bow and crumble under their own weight if not kept in check. This is more of a problem on older properties that didn’t have modern additives available when they were built.
The best cure is of course always prevention, so if your walls are in good condition now, it may be worth thinking about having them water sealed now as a precaution.
